UNIÓ
TYPE: Coopérative
WIJNREGIOS: Priorat - Montsant - Terra Alta
DOMEIN: 4400 ha (Priorat 181 - Montsant 920 - ...)
OMZET: 10 million btl
Presentation: Cellers Unió was founded in 1942 in the Catalan city of Reus, 100km south from Barcelona. Unió was created by a group of cooperatives with the aim of supporting rural life. Today, more than 70 years later, its mission is the same: improving living conditions for growers and crafting wines which represent a genuine expression from the terroir.
Vineyard: Cellers Unió comprises a total of 4.400 hectares of vineyards placed in 5 different Designations of Origin. These include the exclusive Qualified Designation of Origin Priorat, which is worldwide known because of the extraordinary quality of its wines. Slate soil and low production vines define this craggy region.
Garnacha and Mazuela are a key element in QDO Priorat, as well as in DO Montsant and DO Terra Alta, and most blends include a high percentage of this grape varieties.
Harvest: The technical team makes a detailed control of the vineyards’ evolution throughout the whole year. This way, the winemaking team determines the precise moment for harvesting in each state. Vineyards are hand harvested.
Cellar: Cellers Unió has a network of wineries, one in each DO, to carry out the reception of the grapes, the pressing and fermentation. In addition, it has a main cellar of 11,500m2 with many stainless steel vats, bottling lines, warehouse and laboratory. Its ageing room has up to 10.000 oak barrels.
The wines: The wines are a true expression of the terroir in each designation of origin.
Red Priorat Feixa Negra stands out because of its mineral spiced aroma and its concentrated, powerful expression in the mouth.
On the other hand, DO Montsant Clos de Nit is an elegant, well-balanced choice for those who celebrate fruit but don’t want to miss on complexity.
