SAN LORENZO VINI
TYPE: Wijnboer (Onafhankelijk)
WIJNREGIOS: Abruzzi, DOCg Colline Terramano
Presentation: San Lorenzo’s history began over 120 years ago and all our gratitude goes to  Mr. Giuseppe,  Gianluca and Fabrizio’s great grandfather. This big man, almost 7 feet tall, made his fortune in coal mining in Pennsylvania, way back in 1890. He decided to establish a wine estate, on the beautiful hills of Teramo province by planting the first vines. The winery, like a small diamond is embedded between the mountains and the sea in a stunning hilly landscape.
Vineyard: Today San Lorenzo is the largest family run winery in Teramo province with 150 hectares in a single large plot that stretches over the crests of three hills. In this area the grapes growth  is ideal for cultivation of healthy grapes.  Its superior quality and distinctive features are due to the particularly favourable microclimate of this area:
1) the soil composition: clay limestone texture containing shingles. It's no secret that is one of the world’s top wine soil which is ideal for cultivation of fine age-worthy red wines such as our Escol and Oinos DOCG;
2) the presence of several streams, enhanced by the sea nearby, encourages growth and keeps the vines dried ;
3) the sharp diurnal temperature differences assist tannin ripening and the development of aromas as well as fixing exceptional high quantities of polyphenol compounds in the grape.
In our estate you can find young vines estimated to range from around 10 years to old vines well over 50 years. This broad range of vine ages and of soils allows the production of delicate fruity wines to be enjoyed young, as well as more full-bodied wines with great ageing potential with tannins that become silky over time.
Harvest: All our grapes are picked by hand to ensure that any rotten or unripe fruit is removed. All the white grapes are picked up first, usually starting from the beginning of September. Montepulciano is usually picked towards the end of October. Of course the picking time may vary, depending on the weather.
Cellar: The winery is located at “0” km from the vineyards. The monumental ageing cellars are inside the De Sterlich castle in the old Medieval town of Castilenti (about 1500 inhabitants) in the Province of Teramo, in the valley of the Fino river. It was built on a previous medieval fortress under the Marquises De Sterlich in 1501, at the time used as a garrison at Lombard and Saracen invasions. The imposing brick walls guarantee a constant temperature and humidity throughout the year, ideal conditions and essential for refining our wines in barrels.
The wines: our main offer, is based on autochthonous red and white grapes varieties such as:
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (red grape) from the top of Escol DOCG to the very competitive Sirio DOC;
Trebbiano, Passerina and Pecorino (white grapes) the second still and brut.
Our top wines  (ESCOL, OINOS and ANARES) are made of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo grapes produced in the DOCG zone named “Colline Teramane”. Only the wine produced on the Hills of the Teramo province have been awarded with the title of DOCG wine. Its superior quality and distinctive features are due to the particularly favourable soil and microclimate.
